Would you guys recommend getting travel insurance when teaching in Vietnam?

If so, what policy/company would you recommend?

No, not travel insurance. While you are teaching you will not qualify for travel insurance, but a regular (expat) insurance.

There are agents in Saigon and Hanoi (westerners) for at least 3 companies.

I am sure they can be found with a google search.

If you drive a motorbike in VN, get a licence, because then insurance will cover you if you get into an accident.

Through an "agent." The same way you get visa extensions and heroin.
Go to a bar/cafe and buy it.

Heroin, grade 1? About $12.50 a hit.

Bao Viet, about 300 dollars for the year.

If you have a valid car license in your home country then there is a completely legal way to do it that doesn't involve any written tests. The overall cost should be around $30. Otherwise there is the dodgy bar route which might cost a lot more depending on how ambitious your 'friend' is.

A friend of mine bought a Drivers license.

Hopefully it is real.

True on evoiding the written, and you should do so as it is in Vietnamese language.

Seriously, if you drive a motorbike and want insurance, get a valid license.

Most of us on this board know people with tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills because of a motorbike accident. Passport is held until you pay.

It is scary.

Or get a motorbike that doesn't require a licence. i.e. under 50cc.
