5 years in Slovakia - I think I know something about it.

I had been away for 3 years, and went back for a weekend in October 2002 - the same weekend English thugs were there for some football game.

So it is no surprise seeing what they are getting up to.

I understand that their behaviour was due to upset feelings over racist chanting by Slovak fans.

They must have been psychic, because the trouble started the day beffore the match.

Anyway, I will answer sensible questions about what I know concerning Slovakia. It is changing rapidly, so some of my info might be out of date, somewhat like me.

I just got back from living in Bratislava. I worked there for one school year. The school I worked for pays a bit more than most and I struggled to get by. Beer is cheap about 30 crowns- about 1 US. and it is GOOD!
It really depends on what you are wanting to do. I like to travel and you wont have extra money for it. I used my savings. If you just want to spend your weekends there you will proabably be okay. I dont know about costs of apts, mine was provided by the school. But Bratislava isnt that cheap and prices are rising and wages arent keeping up. Now that they have joined the EU prices will probably continue to rise. Overall I didnt like it there, out of 5 countries I have taught in I liked it the least. If you have anymore questions just email me.

I worked there for a year, and I always thought the best part of it was that it was easy to leave. It's very close to Vienna and to Budapest by train. There are some beautiful parts to it, and there are some scary parts.

We had one teacher attacked, and nearly killed by skinheads. So if you look like a gypsy, you have to be more careful. I also found the potroviny (shopette) ladies in Bratislava to be hateful old cows. Outside of Bratislava, there were quite nice and helpful. This was definitely a country where I thought you can't trust anyone over 45, because they were so twisted by socialism.

That being said I met some incredible people there who where friendly and helpful.

For me the scariest times, where when coming across drunken skinheads late at night with my girlfriend; and New Year's Eve. With the sounds bouncing off the big concrete apartments, it sounded like a war zone.
