I'm a US Passport holder, visiting Qatar to observe some student service programs for a US-based employer.

I was invited by an individual who has a confirmed identity (no fly-by-night consultants, or ghost university).

I have a question about visas, though.

I've been given three different versions of the Qatar entry visa by different individuals. Here's what I gather:

- it appears I can purchase my visit/tourist visa on-arrival
- it appears there's a small fee for a visa - which is fine.
- it appears that Qatar requires visitors to be staying in authorized hotels.
(I was planning to stay with some friends).

The university invited me and set a date in a really frenzied fashion (I'm accustomed to that MO, having lived and worked in the UAE) - and then promptly closed for the Eid holiday. I have my contact's name, position, and mobile number --- and I have the contact information for my friends. I don't have a formal letter or anything - but was told "you're American - no problem."

What should I expect at passport control?

If you are one of the passport holders eligible for a visa on arrival not a problem. Note you will need a credit card no cash.

You will be able to stay where ever you please. No hotel needed.
