Hi all! I've been lurking around the forum for a while now and finally decided to register.

After spending 2 years teaching down in South America. My girlfriend and I are planning to head to Spain, hopefully in early 2014. If Possible, we would really like to base ourselves in Barcelona. My question is, when in the best time of year to land a job there? If it helps we are both CELTA certified.

Best, definitely September, for the start of most language schools' academic year (second half of September or first week October).

January-February definitely not the best, unless you are here and ready to start around January 7 (having been interviewed probably in December for any Jan. vacancies).

Always going to be way easier to obtain work if you are actually here.

Note that if you don't have an EU passport, you can't work here legally.

Thanks for the help SirKirby! Although we would like to be legit, is the lack of a EU passport a deal breaker in finding work in Barcelona?

Yes, it's a dealbreaker for finding legal work in Spain (or Italy, or France, or the Netherlands, or Portugal, or Greece).

Germany is a legal option, though it's a tough job market. Ditto central/eastern European countries like the Czech Rep, Poland, Slovakia, etc.

In the old days, it was do-able by crossing a border every 90 days to re-start your tourist visa. Current Schengen zone rules, though, require you to now stay out of the entire zone for 90 days before re-entering, so the loophole has closed. It's also far more likely that overstayers will be detected and penalized. Suggest you google Schengen zone if you're not familiar.

Well, it is true that the best time to find a job of teaching is in September, but of course you have to search it first!

Before the summer the school has to know who are going to be their teachers.

Just start in March Wink

No, not true for language schools in many/most cases. Only for jobs in regular state schools/universities, etc.

March is one of the worst times to look. Lots of schools in Spain these days, probably the majority, don't make final decisions on hiring until the second half of September, when they know how much work they will be able to give to teachers.
