Hello,

I am currently researching moving to Oman for September 2014.
Have a MEd. TESL and 7 years teaching experience. Have multiple publications in TESL, attend and present regularly at conferences.

Questions:
What are the benefits/drawbacks of direct hire vs. recruiter?
Is there a good recruiter out there anyone knows of?
Names of good schools to work for?
With my qualifications, what kind of salary can I expect?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The website says they're only hiring at TESOL Arabia. Can't apply online.

Is there a good recruiter out there anyone knows of? I worked for Hawthorn for two years and found them to be straightforward, paid on time, handled paperwork efficiently etc.

Names of good schools to work for? What level are you looking for?

With my qualifications, what kind of salary can I expect? Depends where you work, with the MOHE about 1500 OMR.

I doubt that there is any job in Oman where one gets more support from the employer than direct hire from SQU. Some of the smaller private colleges are also more or as supportive than any of the recruiters.

I suspect that MuscatGary's comment may be true of employers who do both direct and recruiter hiring?

I was referring to the Ministry who offer far less support than some of the agents.

I've only been here a short while-I'm an agency hire at one of the MOM colleges-but I am amazed that some of the staff who switched from agency to direct ministry hires during the summer vacation have only recently been paid! Shocked

That's the case here, too. A whole bunch of teachers switched over to Ministry and now there's a lot of talk about not being paid in 2, 3 months.

Someone always mentions not working any more until paychecks come, but that never seems to happen.

Not sure what the pros of switching to ministry are.

More cash as there's no agent to take a cut, that's about it as far as I'm concerned.

Someone should go there and do what? Say what? Just another faceless government organization.....a chain of people following directives from above. There are many ways that the MOM colleges of Technology could be improved-but who is going to rock the boat? Wink
