I'm interested in working for a uni or college in the Middle East, but I'm not sure if it's even worth applying. The Omani Ministry, for example, want MA/M.Ed (English/Applied Linguistics/TEFL/TESOL) (or) BA English + Post Graduate Diploma in EFL. Minimum of two (2) years post degree in the field of ELT in College/University.

I,on the other hand, have a BA in philosophy, CELTA, MA In English lit. Not really useful, but I had no idea that I would ever want to work in the ME when doing them! I also have 5 years experience, 2.5 of it adults. I know I could probably get something in Saudi but I'm a bit scared of the place!

Have any of you ever gotten in with lesser/different quals than asked for in the job advertisement?

Yes, you definitely can get a teaching position in Saudi Arabia; your quals are acceptable to most contracting companies and possibly, some direct-hire employers. On the other hand, uni positions in the UAE aren't as flexible (e.g., relevant MA + 3 years of teaching at the tertiary level). Both Qatar and Kuwait seem to expect TEFL-related MAs as well. But then, you still may come across an ad or two for somewhere in the Gulf that states an MA in English Lit is acceptable.

Thanks nomad - I will keep an eye on all the job sites. I really don't think I could hack Saudi though!

Have you tried applying to the Oman recruiter based jobs? That is the only way to know if they will consider your credentials. They all want the related MA and experience teaching Academic English to Arabic speakers, but because there are better jobs in the Gulf for people with those qualifications, they sometimes take what they can get. We hear varying reports on how closely the rules are being enforced. And if you do get an interview, be sure to bring it up and discuss any issues that may come up.

VS is right, try for an Omani recruiter job, take it and then transfer to the relevant direct hire after a year.

nomad soul, you've posted elsewhere that an MA in English Lit is very relevant for international school jobs...

I doubt that's what I'd posted. International schools in the Gulf teach content (e.g., art, math, sciences, language arts, etc.) and require teachers have a couple of years of experience and hold a teaching license from their home country. A look at these types of positions on Teach Away's site indicates the required qualifications.
