I've heard estimates from $1500-$4000+ Realistically how much should I take? Assuming I arrive in Chiang Mai at the end of March and begin looking for work immediately. I'll also continue doing free lance work and will be earning ~$100 a week from that.

You have to have enough money to be hunkered down for say 4 months + money for a return ticket (unless you want to depend on the embassy to provide one back Laughing ) + you should have some money to reestablish yourself back in your home country if your trip here doesn't work out.

Anything less than $4000 US if you don't have a return ticket is really really risky in my opinion. You should be able to land some kind of a job within a couple of months, but realize Thailand is not the West and you are going to have to please the students to keep your job. That will keep away the stress of being unemployed in Thailand with no money.

Hello there,

I would say bring at least USD3,000 with you or have the equivalent of Baht100,000 on the exchange. Thailand is generally not expensive but Bangkok is and if you were to stay in Bangkok I would say watch your money cause their is so much to spend it on there! Good luck.

Chiang Mai is cheaper, but doesn't change things all that much. It isn't that much cheaper really. You can get a job in Chiang Mai, but unless you get a subject teaching job, the pay isn't going to be so hot, the pay generally isn't that great anyway. You won't get a job in Bangkok where most of the jobs are unless you are in Bangkok.
