Has anybody got a good estimate as to how may teflers there are in the world?
I've been trying to pin this down as part of the marketing strategy for my book but can't find any reliable numbers... |

Deafening silence! Finally found a BBC estimate of 10.2 million with 100,000 in China alone! |

Wow! In China that makes over 3,000 per province/autonomous region/etc and I bet Tibet, Qinghai, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia have very few. Apparently back in the 70s the only westerners you found there were all in the Friendship Hotel, Beijing.
I find 10 million worldwide a bit hard to believe, considering China must surely have the most. Or does that figure include local English teachers? |

I think it includes locals and non-native speakers. The China figure is ONLY the native speakers. I can't understand why there are so few books about actually doing it rather than how to do it given the numbers....virtually none that I can find. |

Pretty much impossible to count. There would have to be some central command collecting the numbers from each country - and each country would have to agree to count and report on the number of foreigners in their respective countries registered as language instructors. Not likely that the data even exists. |

I suppose if we started a count, then others may join in.

And now we are 3
"One, two, three
That's how elementary it's gonna be
Just fine and dandy
It's easy
Like taking candy from a baby
Primitive country
Rich in minerals, you
Pay them with beads
Tip the generals
It's easy
Like taking candy from a baby"
Regards,

The OP asked how many TEFLers, not how many English teachers there are:
If China employs half of Asian TEFLers, that's only a quarter million for all of Asia--the largest market by far. Add Europe, the ME, S.A., and elsewhere, and you're up to a million at most? So 90% are either non-native-speaking English teachers with a few % being TESLers. |
