China's been the largest EFL market on the planet for over a decade but neither China, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Singapore offer the course. The most they offer is the Mod 1 exam and only through the British Council or British Embassy/Consulate .

Any idea why that is? It's not like Thailand & Vietnam have higher standards for teacher trainers & D'soS given the job ads and forum comments I've read.

PS: I also posted this on the Vietnam forum.

Hi there,

Reason is simple: EFL market economics. Also Thailand is a haven for backpackers teaching EFL so the DELTA is seen by many as a necessary qualification for many of them. Also Thailand is a cheap destination for EFL teachers in Asia thus teacher training courses are in abundance here. It is important to note that the Thai MOE has recently tightened its requirements for English teachers wanting to teach in Thailand as they know a lot of teachers wanting to teach English here are unqualified to do so. Good luck! Smile

Necessary? Please share with us what job advert website you use.

Recent 'tightened requirements' are the same in China. Up until a year ago, jpgs of degrees and certificates were sufficient but they now insist on seeing originals along with criminal record checks.

From a Japan perspective, CELTAs and especially DELTAs are not really recognised. Most universities are only interested in a masters. A few private language schools will ask for a CELTA or say it is desirable but the reality is most Japanese educators don't know what it is.
