Google a local solicitor, pop him/her and email and they will tell you exactly, go for a solicitor which deals in conveyancing not criminal!

You don't have to speak Spanish to go. Nearly everyone speaks English so Spanish is optional. It's an easy way to meet other English speakers too.

So if everyone speaks English is it not really for practicing your Spanish? I was hoping to use intercambios to actually improve my Spanish once I'm in Madrid.

You still can improve your Spanish. Not everyone in Madrid speaks English. Intercambios are a great to practice your Spanish and meet people. Give it a go!

Hi

I've been in Madrid three weeks now and have already experienced the run-around from local officials re. NIE number.

In short, I'm happy about getting a social security number with my UK passport and waiting til I get my first salary payment at the end of September (I'm already working).

But the couple of local banks I've spoken to here in Madrid say I need an NIE number to open an account? Is this true - for all banks? I don't have any other euro-based accounts in any European bank, so I'm facing a catch-22 at the moment.

Any thoughts, please? Thanks.
