I am just starting to look and apply for TEFL jobs and I am finding it difficult to distinguish what schools and agencies are going to do everything that they say and which ones might be trouble. A lot of advertisements on Dave's ESL Cafe or other TEFL job boards seem too good to be true and in those cases it's usually fair to assume that they are, right? Usually Google is helpful in these cases but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information other than confirming that the schools at least exist.

I don't know if I'm allowed to post links or not but just as a reference as something that seems 'too good to be true' I've seen ads for jobs in China that offer a salary of 9000 RMB + free accomodation while requiring no degree, certificate or experience - I'm right to be weary of something like that, right?

So does anybody have any tips for figuring out which schools and agencies are the good ones and which ones are gonna mess me about? Can I reasonably trust most postings on site like Dave's ESL Cafe or is that sort of a free for all? I know that there is just going to have to be an element of taking a chance when applying for jobs like this but obviously I would like to minimise risk as much as possible.

Thanks!

Your focus is in the wrong direction; that's what these forums are best for. You can research potential employers by doing a search within the target country's discussion forum to see what others say.
