I was just offered a post in Jordan by Midwest Education Group. I would be training their local Jordanian teachers for 7 weeks. They pay is not that great ($3500), but they will pay for flights, accommodation and food.
Has anybody participated in this program? If so, how did it go?
Thank you. |

I can't comment on the program, but the pay is probably about right for Jordan. Plus, the agency gets a commission. |

I'd say that the pay is even high for Jordan, but we don't know your credentials or the job's requirements.
Haven't heard of the program though... or organization.

Thanks for your replies. I would have thought the salary in Jordan would be higher, but thanks for your info nomad soul.
I have an MA in an unrelated subject, 2 years teaching experience (Korea) and did a Trinity Cert a few months back. I was stoked to have been offered this job because training teachers would look great on my resume, and it's a foot in the door of the Middle East, but the pay is a bit of a turn off.
I could earn more stacking supermarket shelves in New Zealand... |

Jordan is NOT a rich country. It has no oil... about all it has is tourism.
With your unrelated MA and limited experience, I doubt that you would get much more in the rich Gulf.

Very shady group of folks. "MEG" is also in parts of Asia and I wouldn't touch them. |

They got back with me, they waited 3 days to re-contact me. They sent a flight from JFK, but I told them I don't live anywhere near JFK. Not only did they do everything at the last minute, they don't seem to have a concept of connecting flights (to JFK) from the Midwest. |
How completely bizarre for an organization that is supposedly in Chicago. Talk about a major Red Flag...

I have been looking for employment since Christmas, BAD economy. They called me on Saturday, then heard nothing until Tuesday. I fly in on Saturday, have a day to get prepared. They have a a horrible TESOL course that I was expected to teach without having seen the material. It's mostly material they ripped off of other sources. Not only did I have no books or other teaching material, I was expected to teach for 2 1/2 hours. Then, a class of 8-9 men for 3 hours. Again, no books anywhere in the office.
The TESOL class complained that I wasn't a good teacher, and they jumped on my shit. How are you supposed to teach material you have never seen before? It's a 7 week course, I'm at the end of week 1 and ready to walk out the door! Typical Middle East; nothing is remotely organized, the work that is done, is pretty sloppy. And of course, if something doesn't go right, it is the teacher's fault. |

So, you've confirmed for us that our suspicions were well-placed. Any employer that provides no materials or syllabus and expects the teacher to create something for teaching on the flight over with no support doesn't deserve to EVER get a teaching contract anywhere in the world.
You can't blame the students for being upset. I would try to get these students (who are teachers right?) to tell you what their goals are for the course - grammar? pronunciation? methodolgy? They are teachers, right? They are paying... let them write the syllabus...
It has a possibility of being a fun course to teach if you can get them involved.
