Hi all,

I am new to ESL teaching and have not gotten my teaching certificate yet. However, I'm considering teaching and want to know the best time to apply.

I see a lot of jobs that start in May and am wondering if I will miss the application boat if I aim for a start date in August or even this next fall or winter.

I have reason to stay in the U.S. for a little while, so it's not ideal for me to begin teaching right away, but I want to make sure I'm not missing out.

Also, while I'd definitely prefer to teach in Europe, and am considering a certificate and job opportunity in Madrid (the company is called Canterbury), I know that Asia is far better compensation wise. So if you could let me know how these dates apply to both areas, that would be greatly appreciated!

- Alexandra

Are you an EU citizen? If not, most of Europe, including Spain, will be out of reach for you.

Assuming that you are a US citizen, you are limited to Central/Eastern Europe. Canterbury can't get you a legal work permit for Spain, and as nomad says, the rest of Western Europe is legally off-limits. You could look at the Czech Republic or Poland or Slovakia, though. Most jobs run Sept - June, with very little work around in July/Aug.

You will also want to google Schengen zone for info on how long you can stay legally in the EU, if you are not already aware (from your OP, it sounds as though you are not).

Thank you for the response you two. It's unfortunate that a program would advertise that they can get you work when they legally can't. Or maybe they didn't specify the whole U.S. citizen thing. Very likely.

I'm going to look into CR for work. Thank you!

At least for "Asia", you'll need to be more specific. There is no general time to apply for jobs for the entire continent. For example, the school year starts April 1 in Japan, and most hiring (for jobs in schools) occurs from December to February. However, there are some that hire for a start date in July/August (e.g., the JET Programme, though applications are due in November/December). Some language companies hire year-round.

Other countries have different start dates, and different amounts of time before the start date when the hiring season is. What countries are you interested in?
