Hi all,

just a question regarding overnight stays of the opposite sex on a casual basis. Does anybody have experiences regarding the situation in Oman?

How relaxed/ up-tight are attitudes towards such discreetly conducted activities of two consenting adult ex-pats?

The location would be the female's rented apartment.

Also, what are the risks (i.e. loosing one's right to remain in Oman, imprisonment) involved in a non-married couple living together in Muscat?

Any experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Keep in mind neighbors see, hear, and talk, so she risks getting booted out of her housing if her landlord finds out.

See "Couples teaching and living in Oman" (http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=90048).

I know of such cases, but both sides should rent their own flats and keep them rented and visit the other flat, not lived in, every now and then, an also furnish it to some degree.

Thanks for the link Nomand Soul - greatly appreciated!

What if the male and female living in the same apartment (with two separate bedrooms set-up) would say that they are siblings/family ?

With a similar ethnic background and age, is this more feasible than a married couple and thus less risky?

It would avoid the hassle of having to produce a marriage license.

Any thoughts on this scenario?

If you claimed to be siblings, how would you explain the different surnames on your passports? The onus would be on you to prove it. As for claiming to be cousins, that's completely out of the question: marriage between cousins is still extremely common in Oman, and therefore cousins of the opposite sex simply don't live together there. There's no exemption for ex-patriates.

Thanks grahamb...good thought!

Well, the female was married and took her husband's name, who tragically died; leaving her brother to take care of her Wink

Does that wash? Rolling Eyes

Much depends on where you are living. The chance of a problem in neighborhoods in Muscat where there are other expats is small. Once you get to the villages... things are very different. People are religiously conservative and you are breaking the law.

Creating cover stories can be yet another problem...

Apart from the obvious pointing to the law, the more liberal lifestyle in ex-pat ghettos and musings about the urban/rural difference in conservatism, is there any factual information (i.e. examples of people who have been living together successfully/unsuccessfully)?

No, because those who are cohabitating definitely aren't broadcasting it. There's no answer to your questions, at least the kind of answers you want to hear. You either take the risk or not.

All of the information that you have received is factual. It is not "fiction" if you are not told what you want to hear. It would be a lie if someone comes on here and says... hey no problem... do as you like... no one will notice... nothing will happen.

Any of us who have lived in the UAE or Oman know people who have done it successfully and have read in the papers of a few who didn't. The "unsuccessful" probably won't come on here to tell us how they were not renewed because of the situation. Omani employers are almost never confrontational on issues like this... a teacher is just quietly gone... often in the probationary period... or just not renewed. They rarely tell anyone why... even if you are the teacher being axed.

And of course, it is the woman who is at most risk here because she has confirmed that she is a hooker in their eyes...

Well, you can try and rent 2 apartments side by side in the same building and no one is bothered by it.

When I was living in Oman the guys would have their girlfriends come over and stay with them without any hassle and no-one said or did anything.
I think it all depends on discretion.

Definitely... but also the neighbors. If most or all are fellow teachers, they won't care. But I lived in one building in Muscat where I was not only the only female, but the only Westerner. In that case, even discretion is impossible.
