Hi,

I'd love to hear from anyone who has experience teaching in Portugal, specifically in Porto. I'm new to the world of TEFL and would appreciate any of your expert advice! What would be the best time of year to apply, is there a summer term beginning soon? Could I secure a job before I leave home or do I need to be living in Porto for the job search? How do I apply, do I just start sending out CVs to all the language schools in the city, or should I be more selective? How long do I need to commit to if I do take a job? How many hours a week will I need to work?

Ideally I'd like to stay there for 2 to 3 months, working part time to gain some teaching experience (with time to socialise!) and making the rest of my living expenses up from my savings.

I've just finished a basic TEFL qualification and have no experience as of yet, but I'm hoping to do some volunteer teaching work before I leave Dublin so that I'll have some experience. I have a degree and I'm a native English speaker, and I've lived in Porto to study and work on and off for the last 2 years.

Thanks so much

It is unlikely that any employer will go to the hassle of setting up a new teacher for only 2-3 months, and there is generally little summer work around.

Maybe consider a summer school - Malta, for example, has many of these.
