This seemed a no-brainer until the recent spate of accomodation complaints at KFUPM. QU has generated far more bile on these boards than KFUPM, but it's been about a year since we've heard anything. So what's new at QU? Doha has pubs and a F1 circuit, but a difficult work environment. KFUPM has a civilised work environment according to one veteran, but KSA could be a real challenge. QU offers somewhat more in salary, KFUPM offers overtime.
Well, what say you? Any strong sentiments for or against either of these institutions?

In my time everyone who left from KFUPM to go to teach in Doha left - in many cases to return to KFUPM.
My critics will; say that I am from the same era as Charles Doughty, Burton and Harry St John Philby and am hopelessly out of touch. I left in 2011. |

I think you covered the variations between the two accurately. Only you can really choose which is best for you. It seems to come down to whether you prefer a more comfortable work experience... or a more comfortable life outside of work. Let the pay/vacation schedule decide? Flip a coin?

It depends what you want. KFUPM winds in terms of savings, great work environment, holidays and work load. |

Which university can provide the softest mattresses for the teachers that are forced to live in university housing? That’s the one I would pick. Either that, or the place where I can drink beer more freely and just buy my own mattresses. |

wind eh? LOL For some reason that struck me as funny this morning.
Actually, I believe that QU pays more. Our OP would probably have to get an offer from each to be sure which was more for his situation.

Sorry I meant wins...or perhaps I didn't
To clarify, you can save more money in KFUPM. You have utilities to pay in QU which you don't have in KFUPM. Also, there are a lot of overtime opportunities in KFUPM, so my guess is you would end up making more money per month than you would in QU.
Summer school work is always available in KFUPM; this means an extra two months salary per year. I'm not sure if QU have a summer school program. |

According to the recent ad, KFUPM offers SR 9,883 to SR 14,458 per month, and pays overtime for over 20 hours.
QU offers QR 17,500 per month this year, which makes about SR 18,000 (Qatari Riyal is more valuable than Saudi Riyal), and pays overtime for over 18 hours.
14,558 riyals vs. 18,000 riyals
But at QU you have to pay utilities, and life in Qatar is more expensive. So in the end, it will be about the same. |
