Warning for all thinking of going to Brunei......Syaria law comes into force in April and they ARE clamping down on ALL aspects ......yes, even on ex-pats. No more skimpy clothing - women can be arrested for wearing strappy tops , shorts or dresses with too much leg showing.
Men have to wear longs and they will probably not allow Western type clothing around the pool at the clubs anymore.
Alcohol will be severely restricted and policed. No more Oz Sportz or functions similar.
The country is moving backwards at a rapid pace.
So is CfBT.....stay away from them. |

Hi JB Shaw,
Just wondering if you can provide more info on staying away from CfBT. Possibly thinking about applying for work through them so any info helpful!
Thanks. |

Hello there,
Brunei is still a great place to teach and make money...so I doubt this new rule will effect others wanting to go there to teach EFL. |

Ok thanks for that.
Are you living/teaching in Brunei?
I'm a primary teacher planning to apply through CfBT but my husband doesn't have a teaching degree. His degree is in science. I was thinking if he gets his TEFL quals he may be able to get work in Brunei too? Any thoughts? |

Make money?
The salaries are okay but nothing wildly exciting. |

That's ok. I don't need to make a motza just enough for our time there (family of 5) & to get involved in what Brunei offers. |

Plus hoping (perhaps naively?) that hubby can organise some work pre-departure too. |

Hello there,
This new Brunei Sharia law is good for Brunei.....and is helping keep out unqualified EFL teachers. If you a qualified EFL teacher there are still good opportunities around to be had in teaching English. Good luck! |

Stonings, amputations, forced clothing for women, that is good for Brunei? |

[from the title] Syria Law?
That sounds like it can be good for no one.
Warm regards,

haha....Syria Law....was this title a joke perhaps?? Are these English teachers who are out in the wide world and being so culturally/religiously insensitive? No wonder we have a tough time out here. SYRIA law, indeed! |
