Russia Says It Has Deported Four Americans

posted on April 25, 2014 at 5:08pm EDT
Updated 6:38 p.m. with comment from a State Department official.

WASHINGTON — Four Americans have been fined and deported from Russia and accused of “propagandizing American values,” according to a statement from the federal migration service of the Russian Republic of Chuvashia.

The Americans were all teaching English in the city of Cheboksary while on tourist visas, the statement said. Their deportation comes at a time of heightened tensions with Russia, as the U.S. has declared that Moscow broke the terms of an agreement over Ukraine reached in Geneva last week and is said to be preparing new sanctions.

“On April 24 and 25, employees of the Russian Federal Migration Service in the Chuvashia Republic detained 4 citizens of the United States of America, who arrived in the Russian Federation with the goal of tourism,” the statement reads. “During practically their whole time being in the city of Cheboksary they taught English to students of the foreign language faculty at the Chuvashsky government Yakovlev pedagogical university, propagandizing American values.”

Quite right too. Can't have these Peace Corp types running around the Paradise spreading their propaganda. Especially on a tourist visa.

Deportation and a 2,000 ruble fine seems quite light to me. I may have to have a word with my Party colleagues about stepping up the punishment.

More deportations to come methinks?

And still I see EFL help wanted ads for Russia all the time. No visa support supplied, ever.

Goodbye Glasnost and Perestoika, we hardly knew ya.

Those foolish enough to come over to the Motherland and work on a tourist visa have nobody else to blame but themselves. Simple as that.

Of course, while it is usually hard to read what cases such as in the posted article are really all about, one really has to wonder if there might be any truth to the 'propagandising' claims. Of all the groups that work in EFL, few others believe they are on a divine mission to educate the world in non-linguistic ways.

Hard to generate any sympathy whatsoever...

Though the fine was rather light, I hope that this gives pause to those on here (and elsewhere) who advocate working in Russia sans a proper visa.

We are in RUSSIA! I don't really need to say it again, but I will anyway...RUSSIA.
Anyone who is dumb enough to work in Russia (or any other country for that matter) without a valid work visa is a danger to themselves and should expect nothing less.

I mean, who does this? Who comes to a country and works on a tourist visa and expects it to be fine and dandy?

As you say, Sasha, they deserve no sympathy.

Oh! It looks like there are now four fewer splitters, wreckers, proselytizers, deviationists, etc. in Mother Russia.

They are very lucky that they "only" got slapped on the wrist with a light fine and a door hitting their too soft derrières on the way out. No trip for Siberia for them?!? The Comrades are getting soft. Mad

This lot needed some re-education, so why not offer them a rigorous study program?

Warm regards,
