Hey everyone, I've been reading about the job situations for teachers in Spain and had some questions if anyone wouldn't mind answering. First off, my girlfriend and I are from Canada. We are certified teachers here with 3 years teaching experience in the public system. We are in Korea right now finishing up our contracts which end in late September. We will be heading to Spain then to look for work.
1) We're a little confused about work visas for Canadians..is it possible or are we having to look for work illegally?
2)Also, does anyone know about international schools in Spain? Do they exist and do they have a specific calender year (ie. when do they hire?).
3)Thirdly, are there jobs out there where you can save money and still enjoy yourself a little each month or will our experience there have to solely be for the experience (I can also speak Spanish somewhat fluently).
Any help with these questions is greatly appreciated..thanks a lot in advance!

With Canadian passports, you won't easily find legal work in Spain. Most citizens of non-EU countries in Spain are working illegally. If you're ok with that kind of insecurity vis-a-vis health coverage, uncertain income, etc., it's possible to live, work, and enjoy some of the nice things about the country. |

International Schools may be the route to go if you certified to teach in the Canadian school system. If one of these schools wants you it will help you with the permit process. The key is to apply far enough in advance. It can take about 6 months to get the permit.
Many of these schools use recruiters like ISS:
http://www.iss.edu/edustaff/edustafffaqs.html
Check Google for more recruiters.
You could also try applying directly to schools. The Web Site of the US. Embassy in Spain has a list of Iternational Schools in Spain: http://www.embusa.es/edu/listen.html
Regarding info for Candians, the Candian Embassy has a section on residence & work permits at http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/canadaeuropa/spain/entry-en.asp.
MSN has a group called Canadians in Spain at: http://groups.msn.com/CanadiansinSpainCanadiensenEspagne/
Hope that helps,
Charles
