Make sure you follow Joe on twitter, "Our Man in Saigon"; English teacher, writer, blogger EXTRAORDINAIRE!!! I'm an instant fan! 23-years-old? First time overseas? Want to feel superior to other Westerners in Vietnam? Follow Joe.

BTW. For a published piece of writing, it is pretty shoddy. The last paragraph hurts to read." There are a millions of..." Joe, choppy sentences my friend, see me in my office.

Lastly, mentioning colonialism and then implying 20-something backpackers have the same ideals is moronic. I have seen the same attitude in Europe; drunk kids are obnoxious wherever they roam.

I might submit a piece about 20-something wannabe writers with far left, naive, white guilt ridden ideals who should have their twittering and facebooking fingers cut off.

Thank you, Kurtz, for the very humourous post! Did you hang on Hooker Hill in I'taewon-dong in Seoul City? If so, then we probably had a drink together as I lived in the yogwon/motel at the top of Hooker Hill from November 1, 2001 to February 15, 2002. Miss Polly's Club Debut and Mister Lee's Space Bar -later remodeled by my American buddy, Ron, who was a top security guy at the U.S. Embassy, and renamed Lee's Old Time Country Tavern. Thanks again for the spot-on post and hope to have a beer with you in Bangkok, Seoul, or in Vietnam.

Greetings Ralph,

Never made it up to Seoul too often; I was a southern boy. I teach an ajumma privately in my current residence, and that's enough of a reminder never to return to Korea.

Perhaps I will do another stint in Vietnam, but down south this time. Alas, the foreign teaching community is getting younger, or is that me getting older? Nevertheless, seems like I am always surrounded by some loudmouthed Gen Yer talking about themselves.

Always up for a beer, perhaps Joe the writer of words can join us; wouldn't that be a hoot!?

Cheers.

I posted a somewhat long, ponderous reply to Mr. Buckley. I did write at least one negative thing about The Party. Do you think that The News will post anything that's even a little bit negative about the C.P.?

From what I have seen on the site and their facebook site, the government doesn't care about what foreigners are saying on it or they don't keep track of it.

I can't understand the comments section of the Vietnamese version, but I'm guessing critical comments by Vietnamese would be less tolerated. You should try leaving comments on the fb page (using a fake account so you can make critical comments. i think using the real fb account to make comments isn't smart).

"But, most Vietnamese can not stop thinking about how your money, a thing that lots and lots of cultural anthropologists and other social scientists say is the, perhaps, most sacred object in the lives of Asians, is something that overrides whatever it is that they do not, a priori, like about you, Joe Westerner."

I don't know. Some Europeans would say Americans are all about money.

Look at Asian tourists who come to America. Do Americans really like seeing busloads of Chinese tourists? I don't think so. But the Americans take the money. And maybe they make ching chong jokes behind their backs. Same thing going on.

I reckon that you're right about some Americans mocking Chinese tourists by saying "ching chong" jokes. Wasn't a Burger King employee fired for typing those cruel remarks on an Asian or Asian-American's receipt? This may have happened at another fast food place as well.

You're also correct to point out the busloads of Chinese tourists who spend money and have Americans not rejecting it. At least, I've yet to read about Chinese tourists and their money being barred from anywhere in U.S.A..This has happened in Europe. I'm pretty sure that a few or more French and Swiss hotels and restaurants do not allow Chinese tourists.

Hmm, when did you get the quote from my post? I saw on Sunday that my post had been rejected by that newspaper.

Having forced myself to read this obvious trolling of expats from yet another bitter loser who obviously couldn't handle living and working in a foreign country and then reading the whole thread encountering some the of excellent, thoughtful replies, I came to the conclusion that this is in the realm of the best response -

I simply can't be bothered to come up with a comparable one.

The fact that I'm even responding is more a testament to how few interesting threads there are on this VN forum than towards my level of trollability. Or so I say.

Joe, you are a boring, common hater. Move on. Get a life. Discover sex or perhaps real sex as opposed to porn in your mom's basement.

There was an article on the BBC website claiming to be authoritative about the best job for lazy people. No science, no studies, just a claim that being an EFL teacher was the answer. Thanks to that faeces releasing sphincter I've had at least two students tell me that their father says I'm lazy. I guess that's an upgrade on the old 'you shoulda, woulda, coulda been flipping burgers if you're an EFL teacher' attack that was prevalent on these boards a few years ago.

The laziest job? A toss up between a hack wanna be writer and whatever editor publishes their attacks on whatever segment of the population they feel they can.
