Well, I notice that the Turkish forum has quietly forgotten this, so purely in the interests of education, what lessons can be learned?

Don't work in coal mines. It is dark, dirty and dangerous.
They blow up. They cave in. (not that this is news to anyone.)

That teachers who complain about how hard their job is should shut the f**k up?

I'm not sure what lessons we can learn, but Turkey's government will pay dearly for this accident that killed nearly 300 miners in Soma.

Weeks earlier it had snubbed opposition attempts to discuss poor safety, insisting the measures in place were "impeccable". Even now, with characteristic insouciance, Prime Minister Erdogan claims it was just "one of those things" citing similar large-scale disasters in Britain in the 19th century (!!), as if major industrial accidents were no one's fault. The truth is very different.

At Soma, cheap components- notably the electrical transformer that blew up and caused the accident - were used in preference to reliable foreign makes. Inspectors had tried to close the mine several times because of its scandalous condition, yet politicians always came to the owner's rescue. Erdogan bears a personal responsibility for all of this. He has long used the mines as a source of personal patronage, awarding licences to his cronies and by-passing state controls. The only reason Soma miners turned out in force at a recent rally of his Justice and Development Party, it now turns out, is because they were told if they didn't they'd get no lunch. It's all sadly symptomatic of a government that has lost touch with reality, morality, ethics and the rule of law.

Well thank you very much indeed for that dedicated, for once an intelligent and considered reply that connects with the situation on a personal as well as political level. Pity the other responders treated the issue with such distain and indifference, unless of course the subject was a bloody football match!
