I am considering employment with Castle English and was wondering what anyone could tell me about them. Also, was wondering what I should ask for in terms of a salary and benefits. I have a BA in Psychology, an MA in Public Administration, I am TEFL certified and have taught children of all ages and adults for more than 10 years. I am not however, certified to teach in the United States. I also wondered if a physical and drug test were required when obtaining the work visa... Any answers would be much appreciated... Smile

What are Castle English offering? Is this a kiddie school (I obviously don't know anything about it personally)?

Are they offering to get you a work visa?

In general, teachers here start out teaching businesspeople in their workplaces via private language schools. I know the basics of this. There is also a growing market for private children's schools - this segment of the market I know little about (allergic to children).

Also in general, it is very rare to find a job in the Czech Rep from abroad unless it is with one of these private children's schools, somewhere very rural, or if you have high-level specialist quals (yours are unrelated to EFL - just being an MA holder isn't considered specialist, of course).

Unless this is a specialized or very rural school, I'd be wary of any offer for a teacher sight-unseen - it's possible that they are hiring from abroad because the numerous teacher around here know better than to work for them.

They are in Liberec.... here is there link... I am uncertain about what they are offering as I haven't interviewed with them yet... I was hoping to have a better understanding of the average salary and cost of living before meeting with them on Friday... thanks for the reply....

Well, I can only speak very generally. I have a place in a small town outside of Prague, so have a clue about cost of living outside the big city...

I would guess rent to be between 6-10,000 czk/monthly. It varies depending on size, location and whether you will share. You will want to ask the school very specifically about housing. They may have something (shared or single) to offer, and if not, you will want assistance to organize something. It's not feasible to do this on your own as a non-Czech speaker.
In terms of gross salary, you'll hopefully get something like 20,000 czk+ monthly. The school should handle taxes for you. You might live very frugally on 5-6,000 czk/monthly over your living expenses, but it would be fairly tight, I think. Again, I'd ask the school directly about this as wages in the region are well known to be subsistence level for entry-level teachers, and the difference of a couple of thousand crowns/monthly makes a difference. Ask them what you could expect to be able to afford on the salary offered - they should be able to answer this.

I seem to remember another poster with an interview for this school a couple of years ago. I will try to find the thread. I recall that he didn't take the position, I believe, but can't remember why.

Liberec is pretty nice, but small. Your first social network will necessarily be your co-workers, so it's worth reading up about them on the website:-) Czechs do make friends, but not swiftly in most cases, and of course they have established lives/friends/etc already, so it can take some time to establish social connections here.
