I am looking for current info on the above, if anyone has it. There are old posts, but maybe things have changed for the better. Ever the optimist! Laughing

Edgewater Qatar is the recruiter, and a sweet deal is on offer. Is it worth it? I am accustomed to all the usual ups and downs of working in the Gulf, but would just like to know the low down.

I only know what it says in their ad. However, I have read that the GDP/capita is over $100,000 per annum; and the Edgewater is offering around $37K. so, I would check the cost of living. Also, Qatar has been getting some negative publicity of late.

It all depends how the publicity would impact EFL teaching in the country. For one, it might lead to fewer or less qualified people applying. On the other hand, it might lead to changes in how EFL teachers are treated, since some of the publicity has been related to treatment of foreigners (though not specifically teachers).

Specific complaints relating to teaching in Qatar are thrashed out in this forum and in fora in other EFL sites. Glancing through them, I have found an older discussion of Edgewater at
http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=93538&start=15 .

Also, any individual considering working in Qatar might look into the noise about Qatar and consider whether there are moral considerations precluding her or his working there.

The current publicity concerning treatment of workers in Qatar is nothing new. It is the same as it has been in all of the Gulf since I arrived in the 80s, and while we may not approve, it won't improve all that much anytime soon. As long as you have thousands of workers clamoring for these positions due to the even worse conditions in their own countries, it will continue. It took over 10 years of international pressure to finally get rid of the child jockeys in the camel racing. And it only happened because they developed the little robots to do the work. I don't expect employment conditions for manual workers to change until they run out of their oil reserves.

So anyone morally concerned will have to avoid all of the gulf countries...
