I've been asked to invoice for the time taken in creating some exam papers.

There were six papers in all – four entirely unique, plus two that were largely hybrids of two other papers minor additional content.

I then created two further papers, largely hybrids of some of the previous ones and then a further one, again mainly a hybrid but with additional questions added.

(In case you're wondering, the exams were done in two sittings with three versions for each sitting the first time, followed by a resit with content from the papers that the least number of re-sitting students had done the first time, with add-ons, and a similar process for the final paper.

I didn't calculate the time taken as I hadn't know I would be allowed to invoice it.

Is there a standard way of calculating this?

I was considering charging for about 14 hours:

2hrs per paper for the first six plus one hour for the second two papers and one hour for the final paper.

There is no doubt that this is considerably less than the actual time taken, as all the content was original, if based on books, worksheets, classroom slides, etc. and the papers were marked out of 100. With printing and checking proofs, it could easily be double the time I've suggested.

Does the above amount seem reasonable or should I charge more or less?

As I don't have experience in writing papers, I'm not sure if there is a standard amount of time I should be expected to be able to complete a paper in or if there is just a regular rate. I'm highly meticulous about these sorts of things and I had no one to proof read the papers, so I did burn the midnight oil making sure every detail was correct but maybe I would have been expected to have done it in less time.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience to share?
