This is old news... and not really relevant to expat TEFLERs. There were two mass "trials" and about 12-1300 have been sentenced to death. Personally I don't see it happening and expect that the newly 'elected" President Sisi will choose to magnanimously negate the sentences... for Ramadhan or Eid?
These were show trials to scare the Arab Springers...

All death sentences have to be agreed upon by the Grand Mufti from Al-Azhar and until that happens it's not a real death sentence. |

I'm so glad to hear this from a non-native egyptian, I nearly cried blood every time CNN would report the news and fail to mention the sentence's significance (or lack of) without Al Mufty's (Chief Islamic cleric) advice or that the majority of those who were tried weren't even in custody and as soon as they'd get caught they'd have a re-trial that would override the death sentences altogether. |
