Well, my first choice is HK so if I have the chance to go this year, I'll keep my options open for it!

Likewise! Though after a look through here, it looks like it will be another month before schools start calling round. |

Not so much about quitting, more about whether to accept a position that may clash with the net scheme start date. |

Don't quit your day job is pretty good advice.
You're looking at about 40 job openings this year in the NET scheme. Less actually as some schools that have been listed have already found replacements.
Plus however many thousands of applicants........let's see, divide that, carry the 4 and.....don't quit your day job! |

Sorry Dieth, the list is available to current NETs who are changing schools and it is an overwhelmingly agreed upon decision (to which I agree) not to share the list publicly. If it was shared then it would be a big disadvantage to current NETs. |

I was wondering could someone explain how the "pool" works exactly?
So, you pass the interview and are accepted and then they put you into a pool with other candidates. Basically, if schools are interested they'll contact you directly, is that it?
It seems a bit hard to know if you'll be picked. Say you pass interview but don't think you'll get in then in the meantime find another job, what happens if a school then contacts you and you say you've already found something else. Does that affect your chances next time around? I was going to apply for next year but from what everyone says the chances of me being picked are very slim (say I pass the interview) so plan to have another job, however, wondered if my chances would be affected if say under some small circumstance a school contacted me and wanted to interview me.
Also, people say some candidates may have to wait 3 years. Are you at some kind of advantage if you're in the pool in the second year? I mean after all you could be simply waiting and waiting and wondered how different your chances are (if any) if you're waiting longer.
Thanks a lot in advance! |

As I understand it, you remain in the pool until you have secured a position.
If you're thinking about applying it's probably best to get your application in for the next intake. I think if you have a PGCE and relevant experience you'll be towards the top of the list. If you just have a B.A and CELTA/TESOL then it's likely you'll have to wait unless you're in HK already.
I'm in the pool now, but haven't heard anything back yet. I'm going to give it until the end of August, before I start looking at other options. |

Thanks for the reply Ronnie and sorry you haven't been picked yet. Fingers crossed!
I have an MA in TESOL and am going to start a PGCE this September in the UK, but don't think I have the experience they're after so I might just wait and apply in a year. Was going to apply this time around but think it might be better waiting when I have more experience.
Do you have a PGCE? |
