Hello Everyone

I have a Taiwanese friend who is going to Istanbul later this month to do a very important presentation. We are in the process of looking at websites about the 'Dos and Don'ts' related to the culture in Turkey.

However, if anyone would like to pass on any advice regarding anything (hand shakes, gift giving, ways to conduct yourself around Turkish people), whatever I receive would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Is your friend giving a presentation in order to secure an EFL teaching position? In which case (s)he will need to be aware of specific problems facing Turkish students when learning English (eg. use of articles; relative clauses).

If it is another area (eg. business) then (s)he will need to be more aware of cultural issues.

Let us know which situation applies and I'm sure you will get more focused replies.

Dear All

Please allow me to clarify my original post. I have a Taiwanese friend doing a very important business presentation in Istanbul soon. We are looking through websites (such as Executive Planet), but would welcome any advice (concerning cultural dos and don'ts) from anyone who has experience of Turkish culture.

Thank you in advance for any help given.

Regards

DO NOT use the universal O.K. sign using your hand (thumb and index finger forming a circle with the remaining three fingers pointing straight up, especially up side down), or try to describe the diameter of a circle with your thumb and index fingers. It is always considered polite to accept any invitation for tea, always compliment the food and NEVER discuss politics or religion with a Turk. These tips may save your life. :>).
