I had an interview this afternoon with a school in Santiago. The employer said that they'll process a work visa (but i would have to pay for it) and that the process takes about 4 months. He said that i would work while on a tourist visa until I receive my work permit. I would start work in August but I would need to return to the US in December for a wedding, so would that have any impact on the visa process?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey,

I have been through the whole visa process many times....
First all institutes say the same thing they will process the visa...it is technically illegal. You can not work without a visa. Now its important to know what kind of visa they are giving you.

Visa sujeto contrato, this lasts one year and you can early work for your company and nowhere esle.

Visa Temporaria you can work for many places.

My advice is certify your degree from University and you can skip the first contract and go right to the temporaria. just in case you want to quit your job in the future and switch to another institute.

Also if you are from the USA, there are no fees for a visa...its free.
Iam not sure about leaving chile before the visa process is finished. now they are going to give you a slip before you get the real visa and im pretty sure you can leave the country with that.

Hope this helps
