There is about a 0% chance Mandarin will replace English as the international language. Probably a half dozen good reasons why, I was going to try listing them but I think most people can imagine what they are.

I've been attempting the language for some time now. I really enjoy the writing script part because it looks so elegant. The speaking part is very choppy with the combination of tones and pronunciation. I highly doubt Mandarin will be an international competitor with English ever, regardless of the growing economy (Similar to Japan in 1980s). I also believe the language is only useful if one is either doing business, living/touring in China or just love of languages.
