Hello all,
I have five years of ESL experience and have just got my state teaching license. I am ready to make the transition to better things.

I will make a grand stab at getting into a good international school, however the competition will be keen.
Therefore, my backup plan is to get into a public elementary school.

My question is for those who know, those who are there and who have knowledge of the way things go.

Do public schools there hire full-time foreign teachers and if so, are they paid more or the same as local school teachers?

I ask this question because it seems some countries do, some don't, and some have a system where foreigners just show up to teach a class or two. Also, it is hard to find the information quickly...

I appreciate any information you may have.. Thanks!

I tried to look for work in public schools but it didn´t come to much. You need to have your papers I think, which is hard here. Some of them might work something out with you or just pay you under the table, but they don´t pay much. Foreigners don´t usually work for public schools.

However, there are private schools everywhere, not just international schools, and they´ll hire you, especially if you have a teaching license. Some private schools are horrible and some are really good. Native speaker get better salaries. But, with the exception of international schools, you really have to be in the country to get hired. This is generally true for South America.

You're not going to get into a PS, nor would you want to. Salaries are deplorable. Anyone with a bit of money sends their kids to private schools.

Peru recently scored dead last IN THE WORLD on international tests..I read that from 2010 so maybe they have climbed up a bit, but you do NOT want to teach in a public school there; anyone with any money at all opts out of them.
