I interviewed with them at TESOL Arabia. They were offering a pretty good package, but then it turned out that what they were advertising as the MA-level salary was really the PhD-level salary. The interviewer, who was on loan from another uni, said that he was advertising the PhD salary as the MA salary because he *thought* that they *might* be upping the salaries soon.... At the time I actually got an offer from them, the salaries had not been raised, and the MA-level salary was dismally low: 7275 AED per month.

Their plan was to create a new language center, although that sounded sort of nebulous.

On the plus side, this uni might be a low-stress way to get started in the Emirates.

Dear BD,

Thanks lot for your input. Beside the salary, do they pay for employee's kids education? Or schooling allowance? Anything else (perks) in the job offer?

THANKS A MILLION!

Yo Lionbrian,

Nary a word about a school allowance. Here are the bennies:

4) Housing allowance:
An academic staff is entitled to Dhs ( 25,000 ) as housing allowance to be paid on two equal installments as per the rules and regulations of the University Network.

5) Furniture allowance:
An academic staff is entitled to Dhs ( 18,000 ) to be paid once only for the whole period of service and depreciated over a period of four years (25% annually). From the beginning of the fifth year, he/she shall be entitled to (%15) of the total amount as furniture maintenance allowance, and if his/her services ends before the completion of four years he will pay back the remaining amount as per the contract.

6) Airline Tickets:
A- An academic staff, his/her spouse and three of his/her dependent children (sponsored by him/her) will be entitled to round trip economic tickets for the summer vacation once every year from his/her place of work to the capital city of the country which he/she carries its nationality. He/She is entitled as well to one way ticket, as mentioned above, at the beginning and at the end of the contract.

In all cases the amount of the tickets should not exceed Dhs. (12.000) per year.
B- Dependent children mean boys not more than18 years old and girls not more than 22 years old.
C-All costs of visa, residence permit and health card for the academic staff only will be paid by the University Network.

7) Annual leave:
A- An academic staff is entitled to a fully paid annual leave of two months determined by the academic calendar. In case he is requested to do additional work during that period, he will be paid the basic salary for such a period over and above his total salary.

B- An academic staff is not entitled to annual leave if he/she resigns or leaves the University Network before the end of academic year and submits the examination results.

*************

BTW, the offer specified that they wanted me to work in Fujairah, which some would enjoy but others would find quite dreadful.

Despite their tight-fistedness, they were very kind. They even referred to me as "Dr."

They must have smelled the ether on my breath.
