|

I posted this on the general forum, but am now posting it here.
I'm looking for recommendations for a man I'm teaching in Germany who wants to travel to the UK for a holiday to improve his English. He hopes to take an English course somewhere. He asked me what area of the UK would be good, as far as accents. I think he is hoping for a clear, standard English. He's just learning English right now.
Are there any areas that are particularly good? Any areas that he shouldn't go to? |

I suggest the university towns of Oxford or Cambridge. There are plenty of language schools and some arrange accommodation. They’re both attractive and interesting towns. If he’s going in the summertime, they’ll be overrun with tourists, but so will a lot of the scenic or historic places in England.
Wherever he goes, he’s most likely to be speaking English most of the time with the other students in his class. But there’s no need to point that out. He’ll go and will hopefully improve his level of English, meet others and maybe do some sightseeing. I doubt you’ll hear any major complaints later on. |

Artemisia is right, a lot of places in the UK are absolutely heaving with tourists in the summer, even in more out of the way places like Bournemouth and Plymouth, so there’s a fair chance your student will be surrounded by foreign accents wherever he goes.
I would add Bath to the list, and maybe York even, though the accent might a little more pronounced there. Both lovely places though. Salisbury might be another option; interesting town and lots of other places nearby. It depends what your student's interests are really. |

Thanks for more info. I'm not sure what my student is interested in, but he did mention his wife would go with him and she loves shopping.
I think he just plans to be at language school, while his wife "plays" tourist. |
