I've been doing a lot of research on jobs in Europe and no matter which country the pay is phenomenally low. Is there a reason for this? Are ESL teachers not as highly regarded here?

I've seen some job offers which require over 1 years experience yet pay 900 Euro without providing accommodation. That was for Austria which in my experience is not a cheap country to live in. Bar work would pay more than this!

It's because there are lots of teachers around to fight for the (relatively few) jobs that are out there.

If you are comparing Europe with Asia, then the biggest difference is that regular school English language jobs are filled by qualified locals in Europe, while in Asia, they more often hire native speakers for such positions. This means that in Europe, EFL teachers mostly work with adults only, while in Asia, they may teach from infants to grannies.

There are a few better jobs out there in Europe, but they usually require upper level qualifications, local connections, language skills, and reputation to find.

Pay is low because they don't really need us. We want their lifestyle more than they want out lessons. The opposite seems to be the case out east...

Most European countries have enough of their own to meet demand. One exception MAY be Poland but it seems that getting a decent job there is more and more difficult.

Look for a slave galley headed to the lands of the Moors !
