This link http://www.zakon.kz/4726488-populjarnye-turobekty-kazakhstana-stali.html?_utl_t=fb is probably of interest to any teachers thinking of going there, since schools use these tourist locations as a selling point and a draw for teachers.
Based on my iffy Russian, it seems to say that the main Almaty tourist locations (the Big Almaty Lake, Charyn Canyon, Medeo and Shymbulak mountain) will now be off-limits to foreigners who don't obtain a special permit to visit them 15 days beforehand.
"In order to visit the border zone, a foreign tourist should get a pass in the management of migration police. This means that the popular tourist areas of Kazakhstan will not be available for independent foreign tourists."
It's unclear based on that if people with work visas are included in that, but worth checking with any school that makes an offer. |

That's a shame Almaty is such a lovely place to visit as well. Quite glad I went during the no visa required period now! |

I don't live in Almaty but there is a FB group of KZ expats who have discussed said article and several people have commented that they have visited those sites without problem recently. Several of my colleagues went to some of those places last spring.
edit: guess they just started enforcing it this summer... |
