Welcome to the TEFL world Smige!

In all seriousness, you have a right to be thoroughly peed off. You signed a contract and expected that contract to be honoured by your future employers. Unfortunately, this kind of thing happens all the time around the world and not just in Spain. With experience, you’ll be able to see the dodgy employers a mile off when looking for work in the future.

It also works both ways let me tell you: I’ve been involved in hiring for about 10 years on and off and I can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen teachers that we’ve spent a lot of time and effort hiring bail on us at the last minute with no consideration whatsoever and leave us short.

You’ve been given good advice and look at this as a positive: would you want to work for such an outfit anyway? To me it’s a blessing in disguise. You’ve got your ticket, go to Spain and knock on doors, you’ll soon find work I’m sure.

¡Buena suerte!

On the face, of it, the school's boss was being quite silly, and it is probably a good thing you don't have to deal with her. However, it's just possible that you said something that actually was offensive. Just possible.
It could be that she was being really silly and insensitive (that's what I think), and that they gave the job to someone who was in Spain already. I don't know, but that happened to me once. I was offered a job in Almeria, and the offer was retracted, probably because of teachers who had arrived in person. . It is better to be in Spain, already.
