Hello, I'm looking for advice.

I'm from England, I have a TEFL qualification. I've been teaching English for almost 8 years, first in Taiwan and currently in Japan. My girlfriend is moving to New York next March/April to study and I would like to join her.

I've read a few threads on this board, and it seems that it won't be easy for me to find teaching work, but if some people can give me advice on where to look, which websites are good to find positions, and what places are good and what I should avoid, I would be very grateful.

Thanks for any information.

You may not get specific info on NY language schools until you're in the US and have a legit work permit. (You'll have to research that info.) Anyway, do an Internet search using language schools New York. Also check out:

- craigslist New York
- TESOL.org

The problem will be that you'll need a legitimate working visa before anyone will consider giving you a job.

In New York people would rather learn American English plus there are plenty of teachers who have the right to work.
If you are British, if you have a doctorate then you can apply to work at a university.

I knew an Irish teacher who got a job teaching French in Virginia. He had a MA and there are shortages in certain states.
Just a BA is not enough.

Why does the idea of a Brit roaming the streets of NYC waving his/her TEFL certificate around conjure images of Jon Voight as 'Joe Buck' in Midnight Cowboy?!!! Very Happy Cue the music......
