Gosh, do you have a lot of time on your hands?
And by the way, Auckland is NOT the only place to get work. Wellington and Christchurch are also in the shortage areas (not that there is a real shortage as the market is in a bit of a slump now). Besides, Auckland is a moldy graffiti scarred dungheap with crummy transport, infested with pimply dorks roaring around in unmuffled jap-crap cars.
The food is nice here though.

Great links, naturegirl. I was wondering if you had any insight as to how difficult it might be for Canadians to find ESL work in NZ and what kinds of qualifications schools would require of potential instructors? I couldn't seem to find any job-specific info on the websites. I did see contact info for the different schools, but before I take the time to send out enquiries, I thought I'd ask here first.

Not really sure about things for Canadians. I think a Diploma and a couple years experience should help. PM JosephP, he's an American in NZ and might be able to help you.

You could also try emailing the schools and asking them.

Education team to target China

A high-powered damage control team will visit China in a bid to restore the flow of fee-paying students and the image of New Zealand's education system.

The Beijing mission will be led by Education Minister Trevor Mallard and includes three chief executives: Karen Van Rooyen of the Qualifications Authority, Howard Fancy from the Ministry of Education, and Karen Sewell from the Education Review Office.

Mr Mallard said dates for the mission had not been set but it would take place "soon". It followed a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador, Chen Mingming, two weeks ago.

The collapse in the number of Chinese students coming to New Zealand is partly responsible for the financial crisis facing one of the country's largest English language schools, the Modern Age Institute of Learning.

The mission hopes to reverse damaging media coverage in China that claimed this country is anti-Asian and that 20 Chinese students attending New Zealand schools have died in the past six months.

The team will meet the Chinese Education Minister and officials to offer reassurances and gain insight into the image problem.

Chinese students coming to New Zealand made up the bulk of the 80,000 students who last year earned the export education industry $1.7 billion.

Immigration statistics show 58,554 visas were issued to Chinese students during the 2002/2003 financial year, up from 41,933 in 2001/02 and 18,258 in 2000/01.

The number of students arriving from South Korea jumped from 9041 to 19,600 over the same period.

But arrivals have plummeted this year, with some language schools reporting drop-offs of about 50 per cent. The Modern Age Institute is among those affected by the rapid boom and bust.

The institute normally handles about 1500 students over its five campuses in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch, but cash problems have led to two Qualifications Authority audits over the past six months.

A teacher at one of its Auckland campuses, who did not want to be named, said staff were not being paid.

Work and Income officers were called in yesterday to offer advice should teachers suffer financial hardship.

Students were told of the school's financial problems yesterday.

Staff were informed last Friday, and the homestay families hosting students met managers on Monday.

Homestay families have been asked to look after the students for free.

However, they have not been paid for several weeks and some are threatening to evict their students unless money is forthcoming.


"If some of us have to lose our jobs for the school to keep going, so be it," the teacher said.

"We don't know if [Modern Age] will continue in its present format, but in a sense it's been a wonderful experience because it's shown up what the people here are made of."

She said several members of the public approached the school yesterday offering to house any students facing eviction because of unpaid board.

A meeting will be held in Auckland today to discuss possible action should the school close.

The meeting, hosted by the Association of Private Providers of English Language, will include representatives of the Qualifications Authority and the Ministry of Education.

how difficult is it for an aussie with much experience (both overseas and in australia) and good esl teaching quals to get a job in NZ? should i just arrive and shop about, as i did when i returned to australia; or are jobs harder to come by and therefore i should seriously hunt out a job via email before coming over?? any advice would be welcome.

I'd also suggest that people check the individual university and polytech web sites. They often list positions in the 'careers' sections. You'll also find email addresses for the DoS or Head of Programme who you can email directly.
