A warning for anyone who ever visits the UK.

The drug with the generic name etizolam (エチゾラム), the trade name depas (デパス) and probably other names I don't know about will be prohibited in the UK from April 6th. IF YOU BRING THIS DRUG INTO THE UK YOU COULD FACE A LONG JAIL SENTENCE.

Etizolam is typically prescribed for anxiety, panic attacks and insomnia.

If you think a medicine you're taking might be etizolam under another name, try googling that name. One of the first search results should be a Wikipedia article whose title is the generic name.

EDIT: After doing a little more research, it would appear that it is possible to import etizolam into the UK, but you should be extremely careful. See my comment below.

Have you got a link/info for the change in legal status? I just did a quick google and couldn't find anything.

Was about to send out a public service announcement but need some backup...

Now I've read a little more about the new law, it turns out that I've slightly overstated the strictness of this law. Sorry for the alarmist tone. However, extreme caution is still advised.

You can take etizolam into the UK, but you'd better make damn sure you can demonstrate you don't intend to take it to get high, or to let anybody else use it. So keep a convincing-looking letter from your physician with your pills, and bring no more than you need. (If your letter isn't convincing enough, it could put you in prison.)

Here's a two page pdf guide to the new law.

Here's the official page documenting the progress of the bill through parliament.

Here's the text of the law. Pay particular attention to Section 8.

The new law doesn't explicitly mention etizolam, but that's because it doesn't outlaw any molecules in particular. Rather, it outlaws all mind-altering substances, with special exceptions for prescription medication, alcohol, substances normally consumed as food and so on. (And, to be clear, it doesn't outlaw possession -- just import and supply.)

Etizolam already has a small following of recreational users (here's an entertaining write up), so it is definitely covered by this law.
