Hi,

I've been teaching ESL for about 6 years in Asia and the Middle East. Came home to get married and now I'm starting to look into ESL opportunities again. I definitely want to take my wife with me, but I'm not seeing a lot of jobs that will offer a good setup for a couple. I know the Middle East employers are more considerate in this regard, but I'm just curious if anyone has ever brought their spouse to countries like China, Japan, Korea or other Asian countries?

Please share your experience, I'm looking seriously at jobs in China. What's the sponsorship process like etc?

A couple of "ifs"...

If you are legally married
and
If you have a proper work visa

THEN it is no problem taking a non-working spouse with you.

The employers, in entry level EFL jobs, are unlikely to provide any support for your wife (and future family). You will have to squeeze into housing more appropriate for a single (studio apartments) or rent your place on your own (not really an option in Korea / Japan for example due to high "key money" deposits.)

In terms of the visa for your wife... it is a non issue. Every country I have been in has a "dependent family" class of visa and the paperwork is usually quite easy.

And to answer your other unasked questions:
    Yes, I am married
Yes, she goes everywhere I do.
No, I have never had a problem getting her a visa as my spouse.
    (China, Japan, Korea, Thailand).
No, she does not have a western passport.
Yes, as newly weds we squeezed into "single" housing and moved up as my career progressed.
