Another perspective on the Japanese diet

Quote:
...Japan is the nation that has likely experienced the most dramatic shifts in the dietary preferences of its citizens during the past decades. This is due to a mixed bag of factors — with urbanization, rising incomes, changes in food supply chains (e.g., increases in the number of supermarkets and convenience stores) and trade liberalization all contributing to the Westernization of diet.

Japan attempts to steer people towards rice as the core of the Japanese diet

Quote:
One of the most interesting measures adopted is a campaign that promotes a rice-centred diet by praising its health benefits. This whole campaign has been promoted by the Food Education Law (Shokuiku) that makes food education and responsible choice of food a central element of the government’s plans.

Japanese people eat more soy products than Koreans or Chinese.

Japan doesn't produce that much soy.

Also, soy is pretty questionable as a healthful food. I would not recommend eating a lot of it. I think Japan eats as much as they should when it comes to soy. Japan also consumes fermented soy, which doesn't have the hormones in it, making it less terrible for you.

In our household, we try to keep non-fermented soy to a minimum. We eat natto and soy sauce. There is too much conflicting info about soy benefits and risks.

We try to eat whole food as much as possible - genmai, vegetables, mushrooms and fruit. We eat chicken and fish. We don't eat out more than once a week.
