My wife and I are considering teaching in either China or Japan next year, but after speaking to a friend of mine who spent a considerable amount of time in both countries he warned me that as an African American teacher I may not be recieved very well and may not recieve to many opportunities by the schools(many of them require pictures w/applications). Does anyone have some insight? I dont want to be discouraged by what my friend said but I also want to be realistic. Please share any feedback.

what your friend said is partly true. It will be a bit harder to land a job in China or Japan but it is not impossible. There are loads of nigerians and Cameroonians teaching in china. The demaand for teachers outweights their prejudice against darker skin shades.
The youger generation in Japan is more open to African americans because of the cool factor that is conveyed through Hiphop and hollywood.
Overall, I'd say that you should try and don't get turned off by a few negative answers.... |

you might want to try the South of China - it's more modern... |

sorry- I should clarify that the attention my friend receives for her hair is wholly of the "that's cool-how do I make my hair do that?!" variety. fortunately val is quite nice about people trying to touch her hair.
I wanted to say also that women carry umbrellas here to keep the sun off.
every skin product-even deodorant-advertises a whitening ingredient.
regardless, china can be great. it's tough some days to bear being called "fat" by complete strangers. but some days I don't care. I speak enough Chinese now to know when I am being talked about!
Here is a link to a picture of me and Val.

lingh,
I suggest that you post your query in the China and Japan forums in order to get more responses. |
