| The political situation remains very uncertain, but the Thai Army is not going to allow a civil war and no force in Thailand is capable of challenging them. It is hard to see a political resolution, but widespread violence seems very unlikely. |

| Doesn't this sort of army control happen fairly often there? I seem to recall hearing about a military coup or something just a couple years back. |

The current military government has been running the show since the coup you heard about in May 2014.
The Kingdom of Siam was an absolute monarchy for centuries until 1932, when it became a constitutional monarchy known as Thailand under strict military rule for about 50 years. Civilian rule with elections and whatnot were introduced in the 80's, but due to corruption, ineptitude and political conflicts, the military have stepped in several times since then.
At this point in time, it is expected that they will maintain control for the foreseeable future.

More than a dozen (successful) coups since 1932; 12 in 82 years since the rebellion of 1932.
Most democracies hold elections.
Thailand just has another coup (average of 1 every 6 years of so).
Business as usual.
