To the OP..
I did what you said in Warsaw, Poland from 2009-2011, and ended up equalising my previous British Council salary, for less hours work.
I made a business out of teaching from home, with a 4 tier income:
1. Income from teaching students.
2. Income from students' late cancellations (solid cancellation policy needed).
3. Income from 'Lesson Gift Vouchers' I sold, which were never used and had expired. (Red Letter Day's business model; I truly recommend it).
4. Selling affiliated products to my students, using my emailing list (summer schools, online courseware, second life EFL programme etc etc).
It could be done in any city I think, I marketed myself as towards the top of the market. For example, the going hourly rate then was 60pln per hour - I charged 80pln.
Also, so many people had told me you could not make a full-time income from teaching privates....well that proved to be a load of tosh....
The key to offering a service such as TEFL, and making it profitable, I think is:
- be cheaper than everyone else, get more bums on seats. (AKA Speak Up, Orange School, Inlingua etc.).
or
- be more expensive than everyone else but put MORE VALUE into what you offer. (AKA The British Council).
Just don't ever be in the middle of the two...you won't stand out.
I was the private teaching equivalent of The British Council! |
