I've also been told I talk funny. My brother looks at me and says,"What kind of accent is that?".

When I came home (to Canada) from Japan last year, my sister told me I had "British intonation." What's that about?

I hate to quote Big Brother, but I'm about to, at length.

This chat started when Jade asked Spencer what he did for a living?
Spencer: 'You know you see those people in Venice standing on the back of gondolas, pushing it around?'
Jade: 'They don't do that on the Thames though, do they?'
Spencer: 'No. I don't work on the Thames. I work in Cambridge.'
Jade: 'Is there not the Thames there?'
Spencer: 'No!'
Jade: 'Is there a river called the Cambridge river?'
Spencer: 'Yeah, it's called the Cam.'
Jade: 'Really? You swear? I only thought there was the Thames. I thought that was the main one in London.'
Spencer: 'It is. I don't live in London.'
Jade: 'I'm confused. I thought Cambridge was in London. I knew Birmingham weren't in London.'
Spencer: 'Would you like to go and tell the group what you just said?'
Jade: 'No...'
Spencer: 'Cambridge is a city.'
Jade: 'But we've got a city in London.'
Spencer: 'Yes. This city is called London. And there's different parts of it. Cambridge is a city.'
Jade: 'Of where? Kent?'
Jade: 'Well England's a country, London's a city, Bermondsey's just a throw-off. Now where are you? What's your country, and what's your things?'
Spencer: 'What country am I from? England. The city is called Cambridge, the county Cambridgeshire.'
Jade: 'So not Kent then?'
Spencer: 'Nooooo? The region is called East Anglia.'
Jade: 'East Angular? That's abroad. Is there not a place called East Angular abroad?'
Spencer: 'Jade, have you been taking the stupid pills again?'
Jade: 'Every time people tell me they work in East Angular, I actually think they're talking about near Tunisia and places like that. Am I thick?'
Spencer: 'Well, I hate to say it, but you are.'
Jade: 'Cos Scottish and Irish and all that comes under England, doesn't it?'
Spencer: 'No? They come under Great Britain. Scotland and Wales have their own flags. Northern Ireland and Ireland are different.'
Jade: 'So they're not together? Where's Berlin?'
Spencer: 'Germany?'

Jade is now a wealthy celebrity. Despair, my brothers...

I live in Austria and the questions I get from students that drive me completely crazy are:

You're American. Do you have a gun?
Do you know Al Bundy?
You aren't fat. Are you sure you're American?
Why are Americans so crazy? (I don't think I can answer that one in 10 words or less)
have you been to California?

On the flip side, I find people at home have that 'Oh, You live 'abroad'. How nice for you (eyes glazing over)' attitude. Or they assume that since I live in Europe, it must be one big ritzy vacation on the Rivera. They don't seem to get that Europeans actually work. They just see it as a place where people who have money can afford to go on vacation.

They don't ask many questions but the one thing that drives me nuts is the follwoing situation. I'm sure you've all experienced this.

Me: I live in Austria
Them: Oh that's just great. Me and Bob went on a 2 week see 15 countries in 14 days bus tour of Europe in '74. We saw the Eifel Tower! Do you want to see the pictures? Germany has really good beer. The Alps are so beautiful. We ate a lot of sausage there! We sure were glad to get home though. It's SO different there. Don't you get homesick?
Me: guh

Sunpower,

Maple Syrop is the best when it is being used to drown Celine Dion.
It could also be used to drown b4-4. Why are they becoming popular in Europe? WHYYY?

Ah yes, Europe that famous "country" that all North Americans know exists somewhere in that mythical place "abroad".

Thank you for your very own stupid question contribution.

Stephen

PS. As a European, I must confess my complete ignorance as to what a b4-4 is. I also have no idea whether anyone in Bulgaria, Spain or Norway does either.

This European has also never heard of b4-4. Is it some kind of boyband?

I too am proud to profess total ignorance of the meaning of b4-4. Is it some kind of sexual technique ?

I'm also a European and in Europe now, but have not heard of them.

My curiosity got the better of me so I found their home page. Looks like R. was spot on. For those Europeans who feel they are missing out, you can check out a clip of their new single Ball and Chain.

Sorry kittens,

Let me clarify . . . b4-4 is a nasty bad boy-band from North America. More specifically, from Canada. I thought thzt when I left home that I had left them too. Sadly here in Poland they are being shown on both Polish Viva (a music channel) and German MTV (also a music channel. . .sort of). I certainly don't expect them to be popular ALL OVER Europe (please God NO!) But they do seem to have a toehold in this little part of the continet.

Sorry again!

Dear scot47,
Perhaps you are more familiar with B4-4's other name: 3
Regards,
John

It's a bit worrying R. Either you take shorthand or else you recorded the programmes in the interests of sociological research:-).

Most of the time I'm really glad I haven't got a telly, but unfortunately even I know who Jade was. Didn't realise she was quite _that_ thick!
