If those are too big hurdles, don't come to China. Money and Starbucks won't save you from the air and the noise and the crowds.

Well, some of you might say, "I don't need any comforts! I don't need money! I'm a TEFLer and all I need is adventure!" Well, if that's you, then head for the 'real China" and work for peanuts on the edge of an economic zone, eat lousy food, live under gloomy smog-filled skies amongst the constant cacophony of honking and ceaseless construction and hordes of loud people swarming everywhere, and breath toxic air all while marveling at your sluggish Internet and the endless sprawl of apartment towers. More power to you. Enjoy!

How is that different in a Tier 1 than a Tier 2, 3, or 4?

You still have careless construction, even more pollution, sluggish internet, endless sprawls of apartment towers, and lousy food! That could describe Beijing or a tier 4 city.

I'm not a China apologist, far from it. But to describe every city besides Beijing/Shanghai as 'boring' is simply wrong.

^Yup, I agree. A few people are saying China is boring outside of tier 1 cities, but maybe to them. Some people like living in mid sized cities and may not be bored at all. Bored is a state of mind, and you can always find things to do even in smaller cities. Having said that I wouldn't want to live in a smaller city because I like that I have a choice of different cuisine, and some expats around. Chinese people here don't speak much English, but I expect it to be even less so in a smaller city. Hopefully you know Mandarin if you want to live in smaller cities.
