Hi

Does anybody have any experience of the CELTA-accredited month-long TEFL courses offered by International House? I'm thinking of taking one of these and was wondering whether they were any good. Also, where in the world should I go? I'm hoping to eventually teach in Japan, but it makes sense to see a different country (not that I'll have much in the way of free time) while I'm doing my CELTA. I'm considering Prague, Poland or Moscow for starters. Any tips?

Cheers,
Rob.

Hi Rob. I did my CELTA at IH Lisbon last summer. I found the course to be quite useful and productive, even with the teaching credentials and experience I already had. I don't have any first-hand experience with the other IH training centers, but I highly recommend IH Lisbon. Feel free to email or PM me if I can possibly be of further assistance.

As a virgin teacher, I did mine a few years back at IH Newcastle-upon-Tyne. I'm told the better CELTA's are run by schools regularly offering the course and not just once or twice a year. It was OK, I enjoyed it but a few trainees became nervous wrecks towards the end.

The IH CELTA has a good reputation so I'm told. I chose Newcastle as it's a nice place and easy for accommodation. You're right, you won't get much sightseeing in whilst CELTA-ing. You'll have plenty of time for that after you finish the course.

Why restrict your search to only the IH CELTA? Many schools in the UK & abroad regularly offer the CELTA or the equally good Trinity. Even IH has started accepting the Trinity!!!!

I did the CELTA at IH London in Aug 2001 and It was very good, it was the month intensive and they really put you through the shredder!...a bit frazzled at the end but well worth it....no time for socializing whilst doing the course though...as you will be writng reports at the weekend.

Cheers Razz

Thanks Hod and Voodoochild. Smile

I seem to be getting lots of good feedback about the IH CELTA. I', planning to do it maybe in Prague as it's cheaper. Even with no time for socialising, abroad is still abroad, right? And the prospect of Budvar on tap is just too good to pass up.

I've heard of the Trinity but not seen it mentioned in many places. Where's it from?

Voodoochild: did you find it easy to get a job after being at IH?

Cheers folks!
Rob.

"Trinity" in this context is Trinity College London (as opposed to Dublin or Cambridge). They are the validating body. The actual courses are provided elsewhere, and the quality control is done by TCL. I think Trinity is better than the CELTA course.

Really? What are the advantages? Is it likely to be more helpful in getting a job?

Don't rely on me or anyone else on this forum to give you the "right answer". Do some background research !

Oh, I never rely on anybody else's advice on anything! Very Happy It can be useful getting opinions amd perspectives from folk in the field as well as trawling the web, etc., tho.

Cheers,
Rob.

I did a CELTA at RMIT University in Melbourne in 1999. This was before I started teaching. The course was a very valuable learning experience. Beware the month long course is quite intensive and don't expect to have a lot of free time while you are doing the course.

While I still believe experience is the best qualification the CELTA gives you a lot of good background knowledge and makes you aware of many things about the ins and outs of language teaching of which you might otherwise remain forever ignorant. (that was a long sentence!)

Four years after doing the CELTA I feel that I probably need a refresher course or perhaps to do another TESOL qualification. The only serious professional development I have had while teaching ESL was when I was working part-time in Australia. I am currently working in China and as I am the only English teacher in the company I work for I don't even have colleagues to get advice from.
