|
|
Hi folks,
Looking into HK as a viable option to save money for a year or two and then return to the UK to enrol on a PGCE course.
My girlfriend and I both have MA TESOL's and 2 years Asia experience pre-MA and about to finish a year in Italy post-MA.
What could we realistically demand for in HK. Also, if not HK, where's a better location in the region, China excluded, to save money?
Thanks,

You don't mention what you were doing in Asia and Italy. If it was university work you may have a shot at getting a uni position in HK but without experience it'll be difficult to get in with just an MA. HK isn't a great option as an entry level location but as a couple if you're prepared to flat share you could save a bit. Just curious but why do an MA TESOL then a PGCE almost immediately after? Are they connected? |

Yeah I tend to agree with bograt. Not an ideal location for your circumstances. Coming back here post-PGCE with an eye on the medium to long term and you could make a fortune as a couple but it's a place that requires roots, contacts, in-country experience etc. to get the really good gigs.
You could seriously consider Korea. A good University job with low hours in a smaller town would likely see you save a lot (and is very realistic). |

Two years in Asia was hagwon style jobs. Italy job is something of the same. No uni work unfortunately. The reason for doing the PGCE so soon is to mainly cover ourselves in case we ever had to return to the UK to look after family, and also because we felt doing the MA was a mistake and having a PGCE opens more doors across the world than TEFL does.

Korea is also on our agenda, we did a year there but would be hesitant to do another hagwon style gig. Could you give me an example of some of the smaller towns in Korea in terms of uni jobs? |

Discussions about Korea aren't allowed in these forums. Head to http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/, which requires separate registration. |
