Sur seems to offer limited social activities.
Also, I googled and it looks like there are maybe 4 restaurants in the area and one decent hotel!????

Am I mistaken?

No, I left there nearly 3 years ago. Oman is nice but if you like big city life then Sur is not the place.

To The OP,

Sur is a fantastic place to visit and teach in.....you'll love it there...and the beach is beautiful with lots of seashells and fishing opportunities for sports enthusiasts!

Sur is a small town and, like small towns the world over, has its advantages and disadvantages. Life is relaxed and there are lots of pretty places to visit nearby. Summer temperatures are often much lower than the rest of the country (apart from Duqm and Salalah), although the evenings can be very still and humid.

On the other hand, shopping and dining options are very limited. Suris tend to eat at home and shop in Muscat. An hour to Muscat? Maybe to the very fringe of what Westerners are interested in. I'd add another half an hour or so to where you're likely to want to end up.

I imagine people are most interested in jobs at the CAS. Sorry, my info about that place is so old it's not worth repeating. What I can say is that their catchment extends quite a long way inland and includes areas with a lot of Bedu (Bedouin) students. I've heard a lot of different opinions about Bedu. My personal experience is that they're extremely polite and place great importance on interpersonal relationships, but often have little or no idea how to study. That applies to other Omani students as well, but I think it's particularly so with the Bedu.

You can enjoy Sur or hate it. It's really up to you. I enjoyed it.
