Some might have followed my trials and travails over the last year - the move to Guangdong - to the "international school", AKA Silver Beach International School, Renshan Town, Guangdong.
I've moved on, and taken a position in Zhejiang province. However this time I have been anointed the position of "Director of Teachers" at a young learning centre, which is essentially a managerial position.
I've been enjoying low key positions, where I work and go. Now I'm in the thick of things. I have to manage a team of foreign teachers, recruit new ones, interview them, train them, create curriculum (learning material), liaise with the Chinese staff (of course), the designers and cartoonists of the new material I/we're creating from scratch, chat with the overlords from time to time, teach a few hours/week.
Easy peezy, or 'hao mafan'? I like a challenge, preferably Mt Everest.

It may turn out to be a blast, or boring or a nightmare.
Hit or miss. |

Let's hope it's a blast. I'm tired of drama and/or boredom. Certainly would look good on my CV for future placements. |

Good luck, give it a good go is all that you can do. I find a job where I'm busy and productive much better than a boring cushy number! |

A managerial position which will give you much better transferable skills if you decide to ever leave the wonderful world of ESL and/or become an entrepreneur. |

Take it I need to continue improving my cover letter. 😭 As others have said, best of luck. Having so far been content with being a small fish in a large pond, it would be interesting to hear an experience of a big fish, so let us know how things shape up. |

I've done this sort of job, hardest two parts. Dealing with foreign teachers and dealing with Chinese owners.
Between the two, they made teaching kindergarten classes fun again. |

Chinese owners only care about one thing: money. They couldn't care less about educational standards such as textbook quality or classroom management unless it impinges on enrollment and therefore profit.
Over 15 years in both public and private institutions I've not seen any systemic integrity by Chinese owners or managers. They have no integrity and it's more an argument over the size of the compromise they'll make over educational standards in order to increase profits.
Chinese do everything fast (and usually riddled with mistakes) for one reason: a directive from above consisting of pressure, stress and bullying.....to increase profits. |

I find your mileage may vary on these points. Obviously, a private institution is going to be profit driven, but how profit driven and competent can differ. |

So far a nightmare. Someone mentioned foreign teachers and Chinese owners. The Chinese manager is a total gimp, only cares about money. The foreign teachers aren't bad, but overworked, thus not very happy.
I'll make some money and then leave. Really not enjoying China anymore (never really did enjoy it, TBH).
EDIT: I was released from the job today, let the job hunting begin. |
