I remember a time when people who were promoted beyond their capability and made a mess of things, would apologize, quietly walk away, and look for a more suitable type of work.

These days however, the usual way of operating is to disappear for a period of time, re-invent themselves, and try to talk themselves into another well-paid job that is way beyond their capability.

I sense here that an attempted comeback may be on the cards.

Lord T: I remember a time when; teachers shouted and screamed at each other in the corridor, were posting to Facebook when they were supposed to be teaching a class, putting their feet on the desk whilst teaching, sniping and deconstructing rather than being constructive....

"These days however"...... pedigree shows. I am not someone who failed in my career so took up teaching English instead. Admittedly, I was pushed out before I could jump, but I knew the role was a 'poisoned chalice'. I am a career educator who therefore does not need to "reinvent "himself". "Attempted come back"? I never left! As one colleague put it, 'you cant keep a good man down' and I was invited to a fulfilling role in an education reform project.
